CHARACTER INFO

Character Name: Doug
Character Canon: Rune Factory 4

History: ( shorty )

AU History:

Doug had a fairly reasonable life up until the point his parents were murdered. His father and mother were both enlightened, a beautiful mix of fire and water elements came together to make their first and only child. His father was an engineer and his mother was a delver, both hoping to pass on their knowledge to their child with promise. After all, Doug was born with pointed ears and Enlightened like features before even being awakened as one thanks to his mother and fathers already so prominent ones. He was no more than five years old however before his parents were viciously murdered. Having been too young to know anything about his enemy, Doug still holds a massive regretful pain over the situation.

He was adopted by an older woman unable to have children of her own in the city, living with her and being raised with a lot of love -- somehow he still rebels. Around the age of ten is when Doug starts amaturely delving into parts of Old City, finding things to sell at Blossom, his adopted mother's shop. He has a hard time showing it, but he does care about her and his home.. the older he gets the more that starts to show, helping out at the shop and even hoping to run it some day despite being a rather lazy boy.

Canon Personality:

Doug is a dwarf that lives and works in the general store, aiding the older woman that has taken him in -- Blossom. When you first meet Doug he shows that charming glow, but also this ‘tough guy’ act. This is sorta Doug’s thing as he continues to hide his true feelings from others throughout the game whether it may be plot related or his own character development. Often he’ll complain about the long hours he has to work in the general store in which he lives with Blossom, to him his work is boring but when others claim he could be replaced he’s quick to dismiss their suggestions. “His job is hard and should be taken seriously by outsiders,” as is said during Dylas and Dougs job swap. He also has a bit of a love for food, everything but bread, and he absolutely adores rice and eating in general.

Overall, he’s lazy but only to an extent. Doug is a strong warrior and is good with one-handed swords. Unlike other dwarves he isn’t a smith, however.. From the early death of his village Doug was never taught how to craft weapons nor does he enjoy it. If you choose to marry him he must make rings for everyone in the village and finally propose once his ‘family’ has been given their crests. He’s very vocal how each and every moment he had to spend crafting the rings that he hated it. Showing again, that hard work isn’t exactly Doug’s forte but if it’s for someone else this little guy is stubborn and determined.

Speaking of being stubborn, he’s extremely. Much of his development is with two characters; one being Blossom the woman who adopted him, and the second being the town’s guardian, Ventuswill. Blossom he shows little outward compassion to and mostly tries to only show respect, despite caring madly for the older woman. Doug always makes sure she keeps her health up and that she needs not worry over the shop. His tough-guy act makes him feel that if he where to show just how much he cares about Blossom, his motherly figure, that he would show a sign of weakness. This complex is dismissed however the second Blossom might need to be rushed to the clinic or is in danger, willing to be seen in public carrying her on his back to the clinic if need be.

Ventuswill is much different, he’s under the assumption for most of the game that this guardian dragon is the reason for his original home village’s massacre. He blames her for everything wrong in his life it seems and even goes as far to find the rune stones needed to save her, just so he can hide them out of spite. He is proven wrong however around the midway point of the second arc of the game, previously taking in the main characters worlds about trusting Ventuswill but now more than ever when the soldiers that told him all those years ago that those who killed his family are now attacking Blossom. He saves Blossom but end up injured and can’t aid the main character in getting his real revenge, the guilt piling up. Ventuswill has been nothing but caring and kind towards him, feeling pity over Doug, his struggle to overcome what he’s been through touches her, there are no hard feelings. Doug doesn’t feel the same, and hopes to repay her kind debt and his terrible attitude someday. He also aids the main character in the second arc’s final boss in hopes to redeem himself after recovering.

Dylas is another character Doug has a strong relationship with, this one turning negative as they fight almost all the time. Bickering over what seems like nothing at all times, calling each other names or picking on something neither can control. Their distaste for each other comes completely from their personalities, and even though they hold so much hate Doug still finds the time to remember his birthday, what he likes, and the festivals Dylas prefers. In a way, this is Doug’s closest friend..

AU Deviation: Seeing that Doug was actually adopted in this AU he’ll have more security than he did in canon. He’ll see Blossom as his actual family and not deny it like in canon.. but he’ll still have that “mom, don’t kiss me in public” attitude when it comes to showing it. His parents’s background and in-game race is different as well which will effect his interests vaguely, such as his venomous hate for crafting won’t be something he feels so strongly about.

Canon Abilities: Within canon Doug can not only use one-handed swords with ease but he can also use fire magic. Within his canon he is a relatively high level compared to the other villagers.

Enlightened Abilities: Doug will be Far From Ordinary with the secondary ability being Mastery of Trading.

Starter Pokémon: Nidoran ♂ (Nigel) and Nidoran ♀ (Nina)

Notes/Special Considerations: n/a, he’ll get himself involved.

An interview? Why interview Doug..? Then again, he is sorta one of the cooler, underappreciated people in Union. How could he say no to such an opportunity? He’ll step away from the shop for just a second to answer some of those important character building questions just for you, curious spectator. After all, this’ll give the shop some of that extra free advertizing it needs...

What would you say the role of Pokémon is in your life?

“These little dudes?” Doug looks down to his Nidorans, one female, one male, both different in their own ways. “They are my buddies, you know? They help me out in the mines and ruins, but if you ask me they’re more the scholar type ahah.” They do their habit, one saying Nido- and the other saying -Ran starting and finishing for each other. These pokemon where the last thing Doug had received from his mother all those years ago when she had returned from her last delving mission.. two different colored eggs that just so happened to hatch into these two.

To what lengths would you go to rescue your allies if they were lost in the wilderness?

“Whatever it takes!” his brows arch, his face full on serious, “That’s another person's life we’re talking about.. you can’t replace those sort of things.” His pokemon snuggle in his lap, the topic has always been somewhat of a sensitive subject to Doug after losing his birth parents at a young age. Loyal to the very end for a friend or family.. like that time Blossom lost her mother’s necklace, it just so happened to be stolen from a Pidove that was nesting not far away from the shop. What did that teenaged Doug do? Cimb up on the roof of course and snatch it right back.. and fall off of said roof and break his arm but he still got the necklace back.. Sure, it wasn't like saving a person's life but that piece of jewelry meant something to Blossom..and she could have put herself in danger if it wasn't returned.

What do you think your Pokémon respect most about you?

“That I feed ‘em,” he lifts his thumb and points to himself, his Nidorans calling on his lap in joy. “Little monsters get hungry, they eat more than I do!” Doug pet their backs happily. Doug’s relationship with pokemon isn’t overly strong but it isn’t overly weak. He’s not super educated on pokemon but he seems to relate to his own rather well.

A human has attacked a wild Pokémon who retaliates in defense. How do you respond and whom do you defend?

His eyes light up, “Well, of course I help them if I can.. a human life is important. Not everyone can defend themselves either.” Why would he defend the pokemon? Maybe if they were the attacked party. Doug is a strong believer that he was placed on this earth to protect those unable to protect themselves.. He isn’t Enlightened, but dammit if he isn’t going to give living and fighting on this earth a fair chance.

You plunge into the depths of the Old City. What is it that you seek from the past? Treasure, technology, wisdom?

“Definity treasure,” he holds up one of his fingers, giving a wink. Being a delver at heart, following in his mother's foot steps, Doug has already made plenty of ground in Old City against Blossoms wishes. He has to find something out about how his parents were killed, and though he talks about his adventures with a grin there are other intentions behind his actions. “The place is riddled with more than just gold.”

That was the last place his mother had ventured before she died.. and the same place she found these pokemon eggs. Nigel and Nina the Nidorans.. oddly enough they aren’t native to that area which only brings the question as to how they had gotten there. Both parties have unanswered family questions regarding Old City.

What area do you seek to explore? The peaceful forest, in search of new, previously overlooked discoveries; the uncharted caves, in search of the unknown; or the wildest of mountain terrain, in search of danger, adventure, and thrills?

“Well, to put it quite simply, everything.” He leans back, putting his arms around his head, “From the tree tops to the underground catacombs, I hope to explore and pick though what goods are left of this earth. Discover new and old.. find information about my old family and tons more along the way.” And once he does find his answers Doug hopes he’ll be able to take his revenge.. his long awaited revenge for what was stolen from him many years ago.

“You’re leaving? Thanks for picking me for your interview thing, this going to be in the paper or something?” He sits up, taking his Nidorans in his arms. Giving his reporter a good bye after getting his answers.
